When looking at all the process improvement methodologies used in industry today, all take root back to the basic plan-do-check-act (PDCA) cycle created by Dr. W.E. Deming during his outstanding work in quality management.

The fundamental of PDCA is that a process can always be continuously improved. It continues to be the backbone of many other process or problem solving methodologies.

  • Plan – Develop a plan for improvement once the root cause has been identified.
  • Do – Execute the improvement plan.
  • Check – Verify that the desired results were achieved.
  • Act – Adopt the change if the desired results were achieved. Go through the cycle again if the desired results were not achieved.

The cycle should be repeated for continuous improvement.
